Psalms 37
Delight yourself also in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart. Psalms 37:4 NKJV
There is a big difference between taking delight in the Lord, and being thankful and happy only after our personal desires have been fulfilled. King David tells us that we will receive the desires of our hearts IF we delight ourselves in the Lord. So, what exactly does it mean to delight yourself in the Lord? Here is where everyone needs to start: “I desire to do Your will, my God; Your law is within my heart” (Psalm 40:8) and “I love God’s law with all my heart” (Romans 7:22, NLT). Desiring to follow God’s ways will align our hearts with His, and enable us to find true peace and fulfillment. When we can sincerely rejoice in the things that God takes delight in, then our inner desires will shift and run parallel with His. Matthew 6:33 says: “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” When people live their lives chasing wealth, status, material possessions, and other temporary things of this world, the result is the desire for more, regardless of how much is acquired. Why? The truth is that worldly things do not satisfy. Our deepest longings are something that only God can fill. God and God alone.
If we place our hope and joy in God first and foremost, then He promises to meet all of our needs abundantly. He will also grant our hearts’ desires, as they begin to match up with His will. Once this happens for us, our desires will most certainly be focused on eternal treasures instead of earthly treasures…. And that is when we will experience true fulfillment, because: “…godliness with contentment is great gain” (1 Timothy 6:6).
