Psalms 31

Into Your hand I commit my spirit; You have redeemed me, O Lord God of truth. Psalms‬ ‭31:5‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Committing your spirit to God means that you humbly admit that you are not in control of your life, but that you trust the One who is.  Whether you choose to trust in the Lord or not, the reality is that His commands control the universe, and they always have: “…from the rising of the sun to the place of its setting people may know there is none besides Me.  I am the Lord, and there is no other.  I form the light and create darkness,  I bring prosperity and create disaster; I, the Lord, do all these things” (Isaiah 45:6-7).  This does not mean that you are expected to be an idle, mindless puppet of God. You were created with the ability to make your own decisions and to exercise your free will.  What this does mean, however, is that you intentionally and consistently invite God to be involved in every aspect of your life.  It means that you go to Him in prayer when you need His help.  It means that you give Him the glory when your prayers get answered.  It means that you accept the consequences and circumstances of life, even if they deviate from your expectations, because you know that God always has a perfect plan for you.  It means that you willingly obey the guidelines in the Bible because you believe with certainty that they are written for your benefit.

When you give your entire spirit over to God and acknowledge His power and authority, you gain so much freedom and comfort in knowing that His love will never let you down or lead you astray.  It also allows peace to enter and reside in your life because you can be delivered from so many of the evils of this world that aim to bring you down, like: pride, worry, fear, unforgiveness, stress, and anger.

Remember that God has an amazing plan for your life, which can only be fulfilled if you live your life for Him and with Him.  “Commit your actions to the LORD, and your plans will succeed” (Proverbs 16:3, NLT).
