Psalms 139
O Lord, You have searched me and known me. You know my sitting down and my rising up; You understand my thought afar off. You comprehend my path and my lying down, And are acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word on my tongue, But behold, O Lord, You know it altogether. You have hedged me behind and before, And laid Your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; It is high, I cannot attain it. Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend into heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there. If I take the wings of the morning, And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, Even there Your hand shall lead me, And Your right hand shall hold me. If I say, “Surely the darkness shall fall on me,” Even the night shall be light about me; Indeed, the darkness shall not hide from You, But the night shines as the day; The darkness and the light are both alike to You. For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother’s womb. I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well. My frame was not hidden from You, When I was made in secret, And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, The days fashioned for me, When as yet there were none of them. How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How great is the sum of them! If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand; When I awake, I am still with You. Psalms 139:1-18 NKJV
God took great care in creating each one of us. “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things He planned for us long ago” (Ephesians 2:10, NLT). Because He created us, He knows us far better than we know ourselves. He knows our strengths, our weaknesses, our fears, and our potential! He promises to be with us to help us achieve the goals and plans that He has set in our hearts. “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with My righteous right hand” (Isaiah 41:10). We are also reminded that God is with us no matter where we go, or what we are doing. This means that we have full-time access to His love, guidance, protection and power! It is such an amazing comfort to stop and soak in these truths.
Josh McDowell wrote it so perfectly in his book See Yourself as God Sees You: “…that person must be loving enough to accept you as you really are and powerful enough to help you change what you are unable to see and powerless to change. This person, of course, is God. He is the only One who knows everything about you and loves you anyway. He is the only One who sees what you were in the past, what you are today, and what you are going to be someday…God knows us completely and loves us thoroughly. Our blind self and unknown self are crystal clear to Him. He knows what we need to bring those areas into the light. And He is lovingly eager to transform us into what He created us to be.” God chose you because He loves you and because He has planned out a distinct life’s purpose that is unique to you. Trust in His plan and that you will have everything you need to fulfill this plan when the timing is right. When you are feeling discouraged, unworthy, and are giving in to feelings of doubt, focus on how much God loves you and how much He paid to redeem you. This should help you to see yourself as God sees you.
Remember that the only true authority of your self-worth is Jesus Christ. The fact that He gave up His life for you should tell you just how valuable you really are.
