Proverbs 2
Yes, if you cry out for discernment, And lift up your voice for understanding, If you seek her as silver, And search for her as for hidden treasures; Then you will understand the fear of the Lord, And find the knowledge of God. For the Lord gives wisdom; From His mouth come knowledge and understanding; Proverbs 2:3-6 NKJV
The Bible makes it perfectly clear that wisdom is more valuable than anything else in the entire world, and that it is available to anyone who will make the effort to find it. The true value of wisdom is outlined in Proverbs 3:13-18. Wisdom “is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold” (verse 14). It “is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her” (verse 15). Wisdom is also described as a “tree of life” (verse 18). One of the main goals of the book of Proverbs is to teach us how to attain wisdom and apply it to our daily lives. Godly wisdom encompasses knowledge of God and His ways, but it also includes being able to make good decisions, even in difficult circumstances. So, how do we gain access to God’s wisdom? “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt…” (James 1:5-6). Remember that God will not just magically fill us with His wisdom without some effort on our part. We must seek out wisdom, specifically in the pages of our Bibles! It is through reading and understanding God’s Word, meditating on what we learn, and then using it on a daily basis, that we will gain wisdom. God’s wisdom is truly available to anyone who will turn to Him, trust in Him, and make choices that prove that he or she is following His ways. “How long will you who are simple love your simple ways? How long will mockers delight in mockery and fools hate knowledge? Repent at My rebuke! Then I will pour out My thoughts to you, I will make known to you My teachings” (Proverbs 1:22-23). Where do we start our pursuit of wisdom? By first understanding that God is sovereign, and that The Bible is true, right, good, and full of loving advice that will help us have the most abundant lives possible. “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction” (Proverbs 1:7). To have the “fear of the LORD” is to live in awe of who God is. This means that we respect Him, we trust in His Word and His character, and we live our lives accordingly. When we are living our lives this way, we will make decisions out of obedience and reverence to our Heavenly Father, rather than choosing to follow our own feelings and desires. It is when we accept His ways and His discipline that we will be given His wisdom. When we have God’s wisdom, it will be evident in our lives: “Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom” (James 3:13). God’s desire is to give His wisdom to each and every one of us so that we can all live abundant, joyful and productive lives, regardless of our circumstances. If you feel you are lacking godly wisdom, as evidenced by bad decisions, damaged relationships, lack of peace, unproductivity, and a shortage of joy, remember that it is never too late to start following God’s path again.
He will always welcome you back and will be more than generous with blessings and wisdom for those who love Him, trust Him, and make the effort to seek Him.
