Leviticus 6
“The fire on the altar must be kept burning; it must not go out. Every morning the priest is to add firewood and arrange the burnt offering on the fire and burn the fat of the fellowship offerings on it. The fire must be kept burning on the altar continuously; it must not go out.” Leviticus 6:12-13 NIV
The fire on the altar had to be kept burning and never allowed to go out, because God had started it. This was a representation of the fact that God was continually present with the Israelites. This fire was considered pure and holy, and fire from other sources was not acceptable, to say the least: see Leviticus 10:1,2. God’s fire is now present inside each Christian believer. He lights the fire when the Holy Spirit first comes to live in us. He tends to the fire so that it always stays lit, and so that we can grow in maturity as we spend our lives walking with Him. When we remain aware that God lives in us, it helps us to remain focused on His will and His purposes. It helps us to remain loving, joyful, peaceful, forgiving, kind, good to others, faithful, gentle and self-controlled (See Galatians 5:22-23).
