John 4

A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give Me a drink.” For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food. Then the woman of Samaria said to Him, “How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.  ‭‭John‬ ‭4:7-9‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Jesus was available and willing to talk to anyone, no matter their background.  We need to follow His example.  You never know who God will put in your path today.  Ask Him to open your eyes for opportunities to talk to people about Him.   Ask Him to give you the right words to say to the people He puts in your life, so that you can bring glory to Him in an attempt to bring peace and salvation to others.  This is our duty.  To think that there are not people around you willing to hear the Good News is a lie.  Jesus makes it clear that there is a continual harvest all around us waiting to be reaped: “…I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields!  They are ripe for harvest” (John 4:35).  Remember that you never know who’s heart is ready for the Savior until you ask!  Most people don’t even realize that it is Jesus that they need until they start to hear about Him and what He has done for others.  “for, ‘Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’  How, then, can they call on the One they have not believed in?  And how can they believe in the One of whom they have not heard?  And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?  And how can anyone preach unless they are sent?  As it is written: ‘How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!'”(Romans 10:13-15).  Our job is not to make someone into a believer.  We are called to plant a seed of God’s truth in the lives of others.  It is then up to that person to listen to the promptings of the Holy Spirit in order for that seed to take root and grow.  It may happen immediately or it may be years before anything happens in the life of that person.  So, open up a spiritual conversation.  The Good News about Jesus is for everyone.  Who can you tell today?

Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.” The woman said to Him, “Sir, You have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. Where then do You get that living water? Are You greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, as well as his sons and his livestock?” Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.” The woman said to Him, “Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw.” John‬ ‭4:10-15‬ ‭NKJV‬‬ The Samaritan woman at the well misunderstood, and actually believed that the living water that Jesus was offering was going to permanently quench her physical thirst.  She mistakenly thought that Jesus was offering to make her life easier, and she was all for it!  We need to make sure that new believers that we are mentoring, children we are teaching, or even ourselves do not make the same mistake and seek a relationship with Jesus in order to get something in return.  In John 6:26, Jesus rebukes people for only coming to Him to get a meal: “Jesus answered, ‘Very truly I tell you, you are looking for Me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill.’”  Ultimately, God can see our heart and knows our motives for approaching Him.  One should come to Christ with awe, reverence, and a humble spirit, and be willing to trust, obey, serve, and love.

Putting faith in the Lord and choosing the path of righteousness for the right reasons will undoubtedly bring rivers of blessings, including eternal salvation, mercy, grace, and the fruit of the Spirit: “… love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control” (Galatians 5:22-23).
