Genesis 35
And Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, “Put away the foreign gods that are among you, purify yourselves, and change your garments.” Genesis 35:2 NKJV
Jacob wanted his family to get rid of all idols, so that God would be the only one they worship. For us today, an idol can be anything that is made more important in our lives than pursuing a relationship with God. An idol can be possessions, career, money, addictions, or other desires. When Jesus was asked, “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” He replied: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment” (Matthew 22:36-38). This means that we should be thinking about God and what He wants us to do, more than we think about anything else. God wants a relationship with us. He is not after our good works, our self effort or our good intentions. He is after our love. In Matthew 6:33, Jesus encourages us to “seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” It is that simple. If we love God with all our heart and keep our focus on Him, He will look after the rest of the details in our life.
