Genesis 30
Now when Rachel saw that she bore Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister, and said to Jacob, “Give me children, or else I die!” And Jacob’s anger was aroused against Rachel, and he said, “Am I in the place of God, who has withheld from you the fruit of the womb?” So she said, “Here is my maid Bilhah; go in to her, and she will bear a child on my knees, that I also may have children by her.” Genesis 30:1-3 NKJV
Rachel did not understand that Jacob’s love for her was not dependent on whether or not she bore him any children. She thought she had to earn his love. In a similar way, we might sometimes feel like we need to earn God’s love by doing good deeds. Thankfully, we do not need to do anything to earn His love. It is unconditional love and He gives it to us freely. Here is a promise from God: “My love stretches to the heavens and My faithfulness extends above the clouds” (Psalms 36:5). The best example of God demonstrating His love toward us, is that “while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).
