Genesis 11
They said to each other, “Come, let’s make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar. Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.” Genesis 11:3-4
The people built the city and tower of Babel because they wanted to make a name for themselves, and they did not want to be scattered over the whole earth. They had become prideful, and God knew that their pride would continue to lead them away from Him and toward sin. Sin leads to death, and He loved them too much to allow them to go down that road. We need to continually remind ourselves that God is so much greater than we are. We were created by Him as part of His great plan. We need to take the Psalmist’s humble attitude: “When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him?” (Psalms 8:3-4) Humility is one of Jesus’ great qualities, and one of the marks of a true Christian. Remember what C.S. Lewis said: “Humility is not thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less.” “God blesses those who are humble, for they will inherit the whole earth.” (Matthew 5:5, NLT)
