Exodus 3
Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is His name?’ Then what shall I tell them?” God said to Moses, “I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am has sent me to you.’ ” God also said to Moses, “Say to the Israelites, ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you.’ This is My name forever, the name you shall call Me from generation to generation.” Exodus 3:13-15 NIV
How can you describe someone who IS everything? It’s very complicated, but “I AM” sums it up. God is everything. He is everywhere. He has always been around, and always will be. I AM is a name that describes God’s eternal power and unchangeable character. In a world where values, morals, and laws are always changing, we can find stability and security in our unchanging God. The God who appeared to Moses is the same God who can live in us today, if we will accept Him. Hebrews 13:8 says Jesus Christ is the same “yesterday, today, and forever.” When Jesus was explaining to the Jews who He was, he said “I tell you the truth, before Abraham was even born, I AM!” (John 8:58) When God told Moses His name was “I AM,” it was as if He was also saying: “You do not have to worry about Pharaoh or anybody else. I AM able to take care of anything you encounter. Whatever you need, I AM. I have everything covered, not just now but for all time!” Today, we do not need to worry about who we are, what we can do, what we cannot do, what is going to happen in our lives, or anything else. The great “I AM” strengthens us in our weaknesses.
As long as He is with us, we can do whatever we need to do. There is great power in His name! He can handle what we think is difficult or even impossible.
