Exodus 19
“Put limits for the people around the mountain and tell them, ‘Be careful that you do not approach the mountain or touch the foot of it. Whoever touches the mountain is to be put to death. They are to be stoned or shot with arrows; not a hand is to be laid on them. No person or animal shall be permitted to live.’ Only when the ram’s horn sounds a long blast may they approach the mountain.” Exodus 19:12-13 NIV
God had Moses put limits around the mountain so that the people could not get too close to the holy God. God did this so that the people would develop a healthy respect, or a reverential fear and awe of Him. Today we have the best of both worlds. We worship the same powerful and holy God that the Israelites did. Now, however, we are encouraged to personally approach God because of what Christ did for us. “So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive His mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most” (Hebrews 4:16). We should be so thankful for this precious gift, that we are able to come to God with our needs and requests any time, day or night.
