Exodus 17
And he called the place Massah and Meribah because the Israelites quarreled and because they tested the Lord saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?” Exodus 17:7
The Israelites asked this question even though they had witnessed God’s mighty acts in Egypt, and while they were being led by a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire at night. Today we do not “see” God like they did, so we are even more tempted to ask if He is really with us. We should have complete faith in His promises that He is always with us: – Where can I go from Your Spirit? Where can I flee from Your presence? If I go up to the heavens, You are there; if I make my bed in the depths, You are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there Your hand will guide me, Your right hand will hold me fast. Psalms 139:7-10 – The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in His love He will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing. Zephaniah 3:17 – Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” Hebrews 13:5 NIV – Jesus said to His disciple Thomas: “Because you have seen Me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed” (John 20:29). We are more blessed because we have faith in what is unseen.
So Joshua fought the Amalekites as Moses had ordered, and Moses, Aaron and Hur went to the top of the hill. As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning. When Moses’ hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up—one on one side, one on the other—so that his hands remained steady till sunset. So Joshua overcame the Amalekite army with the sword. Exodus 17:10-13
Aaron and Hur supported their leader Moses when he was feeling weak. We need to strengthen and show support for our spiritual leaders. This includes our pastors, priests, worship leaders, or anyone we know who is in a ministry leadership position in service to our Lord. We need to pray for them, give them words of encouragement, ask them if they need help, and offer financial assistance when appropriate.
